Planning for the Eureka conference is now underway. Spaces are available, it is never too early to register. For booth information
please call the office in Eureka, or the director in charge this year, Dave Carter.
We hope to sponsor seminars again this year to
help loggers receive credit for their PRO LOGGER certification. If you have suggestions, please contact the RRLC office. We also are
interested in sponsoring seminars on other relevant topics for others involved in our industry.
We anticipate again this year will
be the "Portable Sawmill Demonstration". This was a very exciting crowd pleaser last year.
The Future Farmers of America (FFA) High
School Forest will attend the conference. This contest challenges High School students throughout the region in ten areas of general
forestry practice. These events include making measurements of trees, use of basic forestry tools, such as the hand compass, diameter
tape, and clinometers. Skills will be tested in pacing, map reading, table interpretations, and identification of tools, plants, trees
and lumber. Scholarships are awarded for first, second and third place finishers.
New this year will be Humboldt State University's
participation in the national logging sports conclave competition. The event will have contestants from the membership of
AWFC (Association of Western Forestry Clubs). AWFC includes all of the forestry schools of Washington, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Nevada
and California.
All agree last years conference was an excellent, well attended and successful event. About 1600 school children came
to the conference on education day to see the State Logging Conclave. "Zoo to You" was there with their mountain lion and other cool
critters. Several portable sawmill vendors ran their mills for potential buyers. Antique logging equipment and other old machines
were displayed, many of them running. Chainsaw carvers produced incredible works of art that were sold at various auctions during
the conference. A multitude of vendors were on hand to discuss their products and display their wares. So if you have an interest
in logging, come see us in March!
