The Redwood Region Logging Conference is now accepting applications for the Kent L. Holmgren Memorial Scholarship.
Scholarship Information
Kent L. Holmgren was a fourth generation Humboldt County resident. He was a timberland owner, a logger, a registered professional forester and a sawmill owner. Mr. Holmgren was involved with the development of State forest practice rules and forester licensing regulations. He served on the College of the Redwoods Advisory Board and on the Redwood Region Logging Conference Board. He was a member of the Forest Landowners of California and the Association of California Loggers. This scholarship is provided to students in the spirit and memory of Kent L. Holmgren.

Upon qualification, two $500 cash scholarships will be awarded to a freshman or sophomore who is currently enrolled in the forestry program at the College of the Redwoods (CR), and has at least 2 semesters left in the year before graduation. Person(s) completing their final semester at CR and have been accepted at an accredited forestry school to continue their forestry education are also eligible.

Those interested should prepare a brief written application that addresses the following:


  1. Name, address, telephone number, and e-mail address.
  2. Hometown and high school attended. Year you plan on graduating from CR.
  3. Write a narrative essay (2 pages maximum) addressing the following topics:
• Your future career goals after you graduate. What would be your ideal job?
• Your favorite forestry class. Why?
• Past forestry experience, including past employment, and any pertinent extra-curricular activities. How has this experience influenced your future career goals?
In addition, you need to submit official college transcript(s) or a copy of your forestry degree with
your application.  All material should be submitted no later than 5:00 pm, Monday, February 4, 2008. Applications will be reviewed by the scholarship committee.  Successful applicants will be interviewed during the week of February 18th.  The scholarship will be presented at the 69th session of the Redwood Region Logging Conference in Ukiah, California, on Saturday, March 21, 2008
